Kefrith

In this week's feature we get to enjoy the work of the many talented Kefrith, who is a die-hard Myst fan.

He's built his own website. There you'll find links to his Myst blog, animated works, Myst videos (D'ni TV--- hilarious!), Myst inspired activities and more... lots more!

Kefrith's dA gallery is also full of Myst related art so take a few moments to visit. His photography is fairly awesome, and be sure to take a look at his animations, which earned him this feature!

KEFRITH"S INTERVIEW

Your art is varied. Which art media do you consider the most challenging, and which is the easiest for you to work with?

Of the media I've tried, I think the animated gifs that I am being featured for are, ironically, the hardest for me to make because I have never been properly taught how to. For the two I've made, I primarily succeeded through trial and error. I am trying to make a new one based on this video clip ( [link] ), though.

The media that I am most comfortable with is photography, because I have taken two classes in high school and one in college (For circumstantial reasons, I did not pass the college class, but I did gain further experience and skills from it). I also receive regular opportunities to gain further experience in my position as the photographer for my school's student newspaper. In addition to all of this, I've enjoyed photography even before I had proper skills and equipment, so I like to think it comes somewhat naturally to me. I'll let my viewers be the judge of that, though!

What program(s) do you use to put your video and gif animations together? Is there an animation program you wish you could work with instead, and if so, why?

For my animated gifs, I use Adobe Fireworks, although I have an older version that still says "Macromedia". As I said above, I am actually not very comfortable with the program and work mostly through trial and error, but if there is a question I cannot find the answer to, I go to the Adobe Forums ( [link] ).

For my videos, I mostly use Windows Movie Maker (Although, truth be told, I hate the program because of its instability and I would gladly use something else if I had a good alternative).

Outside of the games themselves, have you ever seen a piece of Myst-related art that you consider stunning?

I greatly admire all of the drawings submitted to the Myst Fanclub. Two excellent example are these: ([link] [link]). I also love the diverse selection of FanFiction to be found on dA and elsewhere, especially Locusani: Saavedro's Tale ( [link] ) and The Other Stranger ( [link] ). Oh, and I love the real-life Myst creations that have been popping up in the gallery: ( [link] [link] ). Whoa, I'm ending up featuring all sorts of other people in my feature! Oh well, spread the dA Myst love!

Finally, What inspired you to build your website and when did it first launch?

I always wanted my own website, so when my friend Matt was in town from college last summer, he agreed to help me build Kefrith's Myst Fansite! He enjoys website design, so I think he viewed it simply as getting some practice while helping out a friend! Extra-large thanks go to him for programming the "Which Myst Character Are You?" quiz from scratch! Also, he continues to kindly put up with my occasional questions whenever something isn't working quite right. You're awesome, Matt! To my fellow Myst fans, please check back to the site often or subscribe to my blog on the site if you want to know when something is new!

CURRENT COMPETITION: Stranger Than Ever

Monday June 15 is the start date for the Myst Fan club sponsored competition, Stranger Than Ever.

Participants will create their own interpretation of the 'Stranger' set in a scene from their favorite corner of the Myst universe. In addition to the following awards, all entries will be placed in a gallery made especially for this competition.

:bulletyellow: All media qualify for this competition. Traditional drawing & painting, digital pieces, sculpture, 3D models, works rendered in textiles, etc.

:bulletyellow: Images of the finished pieces must be submitted to the club gallery by Wednesday, July 15.

:bulletyellow: The artist's description of the submitted work must include the name of the Myst scene. For instance if your interpretation of the stranger is set in Edanna, you'll need to include that information in the description of your submitted work.

:bulletyellow: There is a limit of one entry per club member.

Judging Guidelines:

30% - Relevance of work to the contest theme, namely, the character of the Stranger in the Myst universe.
30% - Creativity, work shows original thought. Ideas expressed are creative and inventive.
30% - Technical expertise in the chosen medium.
10% - Clarity of the written artistic description accompanying the entry.

Awards:

The winning piece will earn the artist a 1 month dA subscription, and a handcrafted set of 'Myst' cards.

The runner up will share a one month module feature on the club's main page (not the same as a journal feature).

Note: Two of our three judges for the current competition are:

:iconlostthyme: and :iconhylianjean:

The third judge will be announced shortly.

The 10th Annual Mysterium is being held July 30th through August 2nd, in Spokane, Washington.

Stay tuned for more on Mysterium 2009

Wow, thank you so much for the feature! One question, though: Are you going to interview me like you've done for some of the other features?
